A 2000 Toyota Sienna owned by a Claremont, Ontario family reached one million kilometres this month. The van, nicknamed 'Betsy', has remained with the family since new and still runs on its original engine and transmission.
Owner Marko Intihar posted video of the odometer as it rolled through 999,999 kilometres to the one million mark, a milestone the family set as a goal years ago.

Betsy's long life, in practical terms

Intihar says reaching one million kilometres was largely the result of steady, routine care. His parents logged most of the distance driving to polka festivals across North America and taking extended road trips to Florida. They kept to scheduled services and replaced fluids and filters at recommended intervals.

It’s unreal, it really is. When you do the research of how many vehicles have gotten to one million kilometres that aren’t big semis or whatever, it’s just astounding.

Marko Intihar
CTV News first reported on the van in 2022, when it had about 930,000 kilometres. At that time Intihar noted the transmission had been flushed at regular intervals and appeared healthy. The family plans to retire Betsy after reaching the milestone, citing rust as the factor that finally ended the van’s service life.

What kept Betsy going

The key elements that owners credit for high-mileage vehicles are straightforward and repeatable: start with a reliable model, follow the owner’s manual and perform scheduled maintenance. Intihar credits his father’s insistence on timely oil changes and adherence to service intervals.

Routine maintenance is definitely the key to longevity. It costs some time and money for those maintenance items, but it’s generally money well spent. All the fluid changes, the filter changes, matter. It does add up but it’s cheaper than repairs down the line.

Michael Crossen, auto expert, Consumer Reports
  • Follow the owner’s maintenance schedule for oil and filter changes.
  • Replace transmission and engine fluids at recommended intervals.
  • Change air and fuel filters as specified.
  • Fix small issues promptly to prevent cascading damage.
  • Keep the underbody and wheel wells free of salt and corrosion, especially in Canadian winters.
  • Use quality parts and fluids when repairs are needed.
  • Document maintenance to track what has been done and when.

Practical takeaways for long-term ownership

High-mileage examples like Betsy are informative but not a template that guarantees a million kilometres for every vehicle. They do show the value of preventive care, consistent servicing and addressing corrosion. Owners planning to keep a vehicle for many years should prioritise routine services and underbody protection in regions where roads are salted.
Betsy’s story also highlights the role of use. Regular, steady highway driving tends to be less stressful on engines than frequent short trips. Families who rely on one vehicle for regular long-distance travel should pair that use pattern with diligent maintenance.

It was my dad’s dream to get to one million and it’s done, so we are going to gracefully put her out to pasture. Toyota should be proud. That’s a pretty impressive thing to have accomplished.

Marko Intihar
Owners aiming for longevity should balance costs. Routine maintenance requires expense and time, but it can be cheaper than major repairs or premature replacement. For many drivers, the practical lesson is clear: regular service and attention to small issues add up.
Betsy will be remembered for its durability and the family trips it enabled. The van’s retirement after one million kilometres is a reminder that careful upkeep extends a vehicle’s useful life and can make long ownership feasible.
