The federal government introduced the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit to increase support for households facing higher food costs. Starting in July, the existing GST credit will be raised by 25 percent for five years, and recipients will get an additional one-time boost in 2026 equal to a 50 percent increase.
Officials say more than 12 million Canadians will be eligible. The new payments are designed to arrive through the existing GST credit system, which the Canada Revenue Agency uses to send quarterly cheques or direct deposits.
How much money families and individuals will receive
The government gave example figures showing the immediate impact. A family of four could receive up to $1,890 this year, and about $1,400 per year for the following four years. A single person could receive up to $950 this year, and roughly $700 a year for the next four years. Those amounts combine the ongoing 25 percent increase and the one-time 50 percent top-up in 2026 where applicable.
Who is eligible
The announcement did not list new eligibility rules for the benefit. The government said the program will use the existing GST credit framework, so current GST credit rules offer the best guide to who will receive payments.
Under the current system, you are eligible for the GST credit if you are a resident of Canada in the month before a payment is made and at the beginning of the month a payment is issued, and if you are at least 19 years old, or you are under 19 and have or had a spouse or common-law partner, or you are or were a parent. Certain income thresholds also exclude some households from the credit.
For example, a single person with 2024 adjusted family net income above $56,181 is not eligible for the existing credit. That exclusion threshold rises to $74,201 for a single parent with four children. The government has not announced any changes to those income thresholds.
How payments will be delivered and when to expect them
Payments will be issued through the Canada Revenue Agency on the same quarterly schedule used for the GST credit. The CRA automatically checks eligibility when it assesses your tax return, so most people who already receive the GST credit will get the boosted amounts without applying.
The CRA publishes four payment dates each year. For the coming cycle, the government listed Jan. 5 and April 2 as already scheduled, with July 3 and Oct. 5, 2026 set for the later payments. The January and April payments are based on your adjusted family net income from your 2024 tax return, while the July and October payments will be based on your 2025 return.
If you do not file a tax return, you will not receive the payment. The CRA must assess your return to determine eligibility and calculate the amount.
What the government says
Our government is taking direct action to make life more affordable for Canadians. We are providing immediate relief on groceries and essentials, while strengthening domestic food production, competition, and supply chains to build a more resilient, affordable economy for the future.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne
The federal announcement framed the benefit as both short-term relief and part of a broader plan to support food security and supply chains. Officials emphasized the measure is temporary, with the 25 percent increase scheduled for five years and the one-time top-up applying in 2026.
What you should do next
- File your 2024 tax return if you have not already done so, since the January and April payments rely on that information.
- Confirm your direct deposit details with the Canada Revenue Agency to receive payments faster.
- Watch for CRA notices or updates explaining the final eligibility details and the exact payment calculations.
The government says the expanded rebate should be automatic for those already in the GST credit system, but anyone who has stopped filing taxes will need to resume filing to receive the benefit.
