Drivers and transit users should plan for major disruptions this weekend. The city will close stretches of the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway from 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 to 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2 to allow crews to move the eastern section of the new Lower Don Bridge into place for the Ontario Line.
The TTC will also suspend subway service on Line 1 between St George and St Andrew stations for planned station work over the same period. Regular service is scheduled to resume Monday morning.

What will be closed and where

DVP closures: Southbound DVP traffic will be closed from Bayview Avenue to the Gardiner Expressway. The southbound on-ramp from Bayview Avenue will be closed, and the northbound on-ramp at Don Roadway will also be closed.
Gardiner closures: Westbound lanes will be closed from the DVP to Lower Jarvis Street, with the westbound Lower Jarvis on-ramp remaining open. Eastbound lanes will be closed from Bay Street to the DVP and will continue northbound until Eastern Avenue. Eastbound on-ramps at Rees and Bay Streets will be closed.

Why the closures are happening

The city says the work will let construction crews move the eastern section of the new Lower Don Bridge over the DVP and set it in its permanent location as part of Ontario Line construction. Moving large bridge sections requires extended highway clearances for safety and equipment access.

The closure will allow construction crews to move the eastern section of the new Lower Don Bridge over the DVP to its permanent location as part of construction on the line.

Line 1 subway suspension and alternatives

The TTC will not run trains on Line 1 between St George and St Andrew from 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The agency says shuttle buses will not replace subway service for this work.

There will be no subway service on Line 1 between St George and St Andrew stations from 11 p.m. on Friday through the weekend for planned station work.

TTC
The TTC advises riders to use east-west surface routes to reach stations on the Yonge side of Line 1 to continue north or south. Allow extra travel time and expect crowding on alternative services during peak periods.

Impact on driving and travel tips

Expect significant delays near the DVP-Gardiner interchange, especially Friday night and Sunday evening when many commuters travel. Freight and commercial traffic that normally use these corridors should plan alternate routes and adjust schedules.
  • Avoid the DVP and Gardiner if possible between 11 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday.
  • Use Lakeshore Boulevard, Lake Shore Boulevard East, or local arterial streets as alternatives, and allow extra time.
  • If travelling by transit, use east-west streetcar or bus routes to access Yonge line stations and plan for additional walking time between transfers.
  • Consider shifting travel times outside peak periods or working from home if practical.

What to expect after the weekend

City and transit officials say regular traffic and subway service should resume Monday morning. The bridge move is a staged operation, so additional overnight closures or traffic impacts could occur later in the Ontario Line schedule. Check official City of Toronto and TTC alerts for updates before travelling.
Plan ahead, allow extra time for travel, and monitor alerts from the city and the TTC for any last-minute changes. Crew work and equipment staging can prompt adjustments to closure windows.
