Legendary Ontario pizzeria reopens, kicks off 50th-year celebration
A legendary Ontario pizzeria has reopened for a farewell season. Its 50th anniversary kicks off with the return of the classic pies that made it famous.

Sometimes dreams really do come true, even if only for a year. That appears to be the situation for Vaughan institution Dante's Pizza, courtesy of a little New Year's magic.
Hearts across the GTA sank in May 2025 when the longtime pizzeria announced it would close for good in 2026. Loyal customers and neighbourhood regulars reacted with disbelief and sadness. Dante's started in Thornhill in 1976 and moved to its current Vaughan spot in 2014.
That move came after management unceremoniously pushed out founder and namesake Dante Paoletti, touching off an infamous feud between the original Dante's and the other Dante's, which at the time was called Paoletti's. Despite the drama, the Vaughan shop kept serving for another 11 years. In May 2025 the Paoletti family said they would finally call it quits at the end of that year.
Now, after a wave of public outcry, Dante's is backtracking and will stay open for one more year. The extra 365 days are timed so the pizzeria can celebrate its 50th anniversary in style, giving Torontonians a little more time to enjoy a local favourite.
On Dec. 29 the restaurant posted on Facebook, "After careful consideration, and the overwhelming feedback, we have decided to reconsider our closing date," followed by "We WILL be here for another year!"
The owners framed the move as a direct response to customer outcry, reversing earlier plans and promising more time for fans to savour their pies. The moment the post went live the comment thread filled up, with regulars and neighbours pouring in to share relief and excitement.
It read like a neighbourhood celebration in real time, full of gratitude and disbelief that the beloved spot would stick around. "Amazing news! Looking forward to another of the best pizza and sandwiches in town. Happy new year!" one commenter wrote, blending praise with seasonal cheer.
That sentiment echoed across dozens of replies, a steady chorus of appreciation for Dante's classic menu. Another fan called the announcement "a Christmas miracle," even if it arrived a few days after the holiday. That dramatic phrasing underlines how much the pizzeria has become part of family rituals and late-night cravings for many customers.
The restaurant team also pointed out that the new year will mark Dante's 50th year in business, a milestone that deserves recognition. In an era when longstanding businesses across the GTA are increasingly pushed aside for new developments, five decades of service is rare and worth celebrating. And what better food to mark that kind of milestone than pizza, the team joked, reminding everyone of the simple comfort that built their reputation. It is a delicious reason to raise a glass to local continuity. Dante's Pizzeria remains at 8700 Dufferin St., a fixture in the neighbourhood for generations.
