A Toronto man charged with first-degree murder in a deadly shooting on a GO bus near Yorkdale Mall earlier this month made a brief court appearance on Wednesday. The accused, 40-year-old Tyrel Gibson, faces one count after police say a passenger was fatally shot on Jan. 4.
Police allege Gibson boarded a GO bus near the North York shopping centre at about 7 p.m. on Jan. 4 and shot 46-year-old Osemwengie Irorere of Nigeria. Officers say Gibson fled on foot but was arrested shortly after. Police have not released a motive.
The incident and immediate response
Authorities responded to the scene the evening of Jan. 4. Emergency responders pronounced a man dead at the location. Investigators have been treating the case as a homicide and have not identified additional suspects or publicly linked the shooting to other incidents.

Accused's criminal record
Court documents obtained by CTV News show Gibson has a lengthy criminal record dating back to at least 2013, with nearly two dozen charges over that period. Those records include two counts of attempted murder and a 2015 guilty plea on multiple firearms-related and assault offences.
In 2015 Gibson pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a firearm, possession of a firearm with ammunition, using a firearm, and possession of an unauthorized firearm. A lifetime weapons prohibition was imposed. In 2017 he received an eight-year prison sentence; authorities have not specified how much of that sentence he served.
Court appearance and next steps
Gibson appeared in court via video link wearing prison-issued orange clothing. The appearance was brief and procedural. He is due back in court on Feb. 4. First-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence on conviction, with no parole eligibility for 25 years under Canadian law.
Following an appearance, Crown counsel and defence counsel typically exchange disclosure and consider whether a preliminary inquiry will be sought. Police continue to investigate and will provide evidence to the Crown as it prepares the case. Officials have not said if anyone else is expected to face charges related to the incident.
Community and transit safety
The shooting has raised concern about safety on regional transit routes. GO Transit and local authorities often review security measures after high-profile incidents, but no new security measures related to this case have been announced publicly. Investigators have not linked the incident to wider patterns of crime in the area.
Members of the public with information are asked to contact Toronto police. Authorities will release more details as the investigation and court process proceed.
The case file includes reporting by Codi Wilson and Bryann Aguilar. Gibson remains in custody pending further court dates.
