Barrie police say a traffic stop on Hart Drive around 12:30 p.m. Thursday led to the seizure of a large quantity of suspected cocaine, close to $50,000 in Canadian currency and a spring-assisted prohibited knife. Two people were arrested and face multiple charges.
Officers responded to a call about a suspicious person before stopping a vehicle. On approach they noticed a half-empty, unsealed bottle of whisky in the rear seat within reach of the driver. That observation preceded a further search that uncovered what police describe as a significant amount of suspected cocaine.
What police seized
- A large quantity of suspected cocaine
- Just under $50,000 in Canadian currency
- A spring-assisted prohibited knife
- A half-empty, unsealed bottle of whisky found inside the vehicle
Police have not released an exact weight for the suspected cocaine. They said the cash and the weapon were found during a search of the vehicle that followed the initial stop.

Legal context and next steps
The drug-related charges stem from provisions in the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Possession for the purpose of trafficking is treated more severely than simple possession, and penalties vary depending on the specifics of the offence and whether charges are prosecuted by indictment or summary conviction.
Police say the investigation into the source and intended distribution of the suspected drugs is ongoing. The accused are expected to appear before the courts; details of any scheduled court dates were not released in the initial police statement.
How the stop unfolded
According to police, the stop began after a report of a suspicious person. The presence of an open alcohol container in the vehicle gave officers cause to conduct further checks. During that follow-up, officers located the items that led to the current charges.
Police allege the combination of drugs, a large amount of cash and a prohibited weapon indicated activity tied to distribution rather than personal use. Investigators continue to gather evidence and review the circumstances that led to the stop.
Community impact and policing
Large drug seizures and related arrests are often cited by police as efforts to curb local distribution and reduce potential harm in neighbourhoods. Police agencies say these operations can disrupt supply chains, though they also note that enforcement is one part of a broader response that includes prevention and treatment.
The Barrie Police Service has not indicated whether this stop is connected to other investigations. They encouraged anyone with information to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers.
Two people were arrested and charged following the stop. The case remains before the courts and the police investigation continues.
