Seven men from Toronto have been arrested and charged following what Peel police call a complex and lengthy investigation into a deadly home invasion in Mississauga on Oct. 1, 2024. The charge announcements follow an inquiry that involved extensive canvassing, judicial authorizations and forensic analysis.
Police say officers were called to a residence near Central Parkway West and Confederation Parkway at about 3:40 a.m. for reports of shots fired. Investigators allege four masked people entered the home, confronted occupants and demanded money and valuables. One resident, 55-year-old Ruo Zhou Wei, was shot during the confrontation and later died in hospital.
Investigation and arrests
Peel Regional Police describe the probe as detailed and multi-faceted. Officers canvassed an area across more than 80 kilometres, obtained multiple judicial authorizations and reviewed forensic evidence in order to identify suspects, the force said in a news release issued Monday.
Police allege the fleeing suspects left the scene in a white Volkswagen Atlas. The investigation led to seven men from Toronto being identified and taken into custody. Peel did not provide a timeline for when each arrest was made, only that all seven are now in custody and facing charges related to the incident.
Charges and the accused
Peel police laid a range of charges, from firearm offences to alleged homicide-related counts. None of the charges have been tested in court. The force named the accused in its release.
- Sonam Wangchuk, 25, charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder using a firearm
- Muhammad Rahimullah, 21, charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder using a firearm
- Tenzin Lama, 21, charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder using a firearm
- Kang Lu, 69, charged with manslaughter
- Kwok Chik, 65, charged with manslaughter
- Xi Chen, 64, charged with manslaughter
- Tenzin Jungney, 21, facing several firearm-related charges
Second-degree murder charges in Canada allege that the accused caused a death with intent, without the Crown proving premeditation. Manslaughter charges indicate death occurred in the course of an unlawful act or negligence, but without proof of intent to kill. Firearm-related charges can include possession, discharge or use of a firearm in commission of an offence. All accused are entitled to a presumption of innocence until proven guilty in court.
Community impact and next steps
Peel police emphasised the human toll of the crime and the importance of thorough investigative work. The force said the investigation received critical support from government partners and specialised forensic units.
These crimes cause profound and lasting trauma for families and undermine our community's sense of safety. Every resident deserves to feel secure in their home. This investigation reflects the dedication of our officers and the critical support of our government partners in ensuring investigations like this are properly resourced and those responsible for horrific crimes are held accountable.
Dep. Chief Nick Milinovich
Court dates and details about bail hearings were not provided in the police release. Next procedural steps normally include disclosure from the Crown to defence counsel, case scheduling appearances and pretrial procedures. Media statements from the Crown prosecutor's office may provide timing for any upcoming court appearances.
The victim, Ruo Zhou Wei, was named by police. Investigators continue to seek information from anyone who may have relevant details about the vehicle, the suspects or the incident, and they have encouraged members of the public to contact Peel Regional Police with tips.
The arrests mark a key development in the case, but legal proceedings remain pending. Police and prosecutors will continue to present evidence in court, where the allegations will be tested and the legal process will determine any outcomes.
