The province’s Special Investigations Unit is leading an inquiry after an officer-involved shooting in Oshawa on Sunday left a Durham Regional Police officer and a 27-year-old man injured. Both were transported to hospital and are in stable condition, the SIU said.
Durham police said officers were responding to a mental-health call on Cedar Street, near Simcoe Street South and Wentworth Street West, when they encountered a man allegedly armed with a knife. The SIU said one officer discharged their firearm multiple times and that the man and the officer were both struck.
What the SIU says
The SIU, which investigates incidents involving police conduct that result in serious injury, confirmed it has taken over the matter. In its news release the agency said, "There was an interaction and one officer discharged their firearm multiple times. The man was struck, as was a police officer. Both individuals were transported to hospital for treatment. They are both in stable condition."
The agency noted that it did not appear the suspect was armed with a firearm. Five investigators and two forensic officers have been assigned to the case, the SIU said.
Police statements and union reaction
Durham Regional Police told media the officer was taken to a trauma centre with critical injuries early Sunday and later listed as stable. The 27-year-old suspect was described as suffering serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was being treated in hospital.

The SIU said it will provide further updates and asked anyone with information, including photos or video, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or through siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php. The agency also asked that all media and public inquiries be directed to the SIU.
Investigation details and next steps
With the SIU invoking its mandate, Durham officers who were directly involved will not be the primary source of public updates while the watchdog conducts its independent review. The SIU will gather witness statements, examine forensic evidence and review any available audio or video. The agency did not say whether any charges were anticipated.
Anyone who was in the area of Cedar Street around the time of the incident and who may have captured footage or observed relevant activity should contact the SIU. The agency typically compiles evidence and prepares a report for its director, who will decide whether criminal charges are warranted.
Other incidents in the region this weekend
York Regional Police also investigated an overnight incident in Vaughan after two masked suspects fired multiple shots at a parked vehicle and smashed its windows in the area of Madeira Avenue and Genoa Road. No injuries were reported. Police described one suspect as heavy-set, wearing a black hat and a dark coat.
In Toronto, emergency crews responded to a residential fire in Parkdale early Sunday. Three people were injured, one with life-threatening injuries. Firefighters had the blaze under control by mid-morning and an investigation is ongoing.
What this means for the community
The SIU investigation will determine whether the use of force met legal thresholds and police policies. Independent probes are standard procedure after serious injuries involving officers, intended to preserve public trust and ensure accountability.
