Starbucks is relaunching its Rewards program in Canada on Mar. 10 with a three-tier structure: Green, Gold and Reserve. The update changes how Stars are earned, when they expire and what members can redeem, while adding several new member perks.
All existing Stars will remain in members' accounts, and tier designations shown at launch will be based on each member's Starbucks Rewards engagement in 2025. The company says many of the changes respond to customer feedback about expiry and clarity of benefits.
How the tiers work
The program has three distinct levels with different earning rates, thresholds and benefits. Membership starts at Green; Gold and Reserve require meeting Stars thresholds over a rolling 12-month period.
- Green: 1 Star per dollar spent. Members receive a free food or beverage reward to claim on their birthday, early access to select food and beverage drops, and a new Free Mod Mondays benefit.
- Gold: Reach 500 Stars in 12 months. Earn 1.5 Stars per dollar, or 15 Stars for every $10 spent. Gold includes Green perks plus a seven-day window to claim birthday rewards, non-expiring Stars, and four Double Star days a year.
- Reserve: Reach 2,500 Stars in 12 months. Earn 1.7 Stars per dollar. Reserve members get Gold and Green benefits, a 30-day birthday window, six additional Double Star days per year, and access to exclusive opportunities, including select travel experiences.
Earning rates, expiry and the new 60-Star reward
Stars continue to be earned on purchases and redeemed for drinks, food or merchandise. Green members earn one Star per dollar, Gold members 1.5 Stars per dollar, and Reserve members 1.7 Stars per dollar. Starbucks has also introduced a 60-Star reward that gives $2 off a qualifying purchase.
Star expiry rules have changed. Gold and Reserve Stars will not expire. Green members' Stars are valid for six months but can be extended by one month if the member completes a qualifying monthly activity, such as making any purchase or redeeming a reward.
To put the thresholds in practical terms: at the Green earning rate, 500 Stars equals about $500 in purchases, while 2,500 Stars equals about $2,500. Earning rates at Gold and Reserve reduce the dollars required once those tiers are reached, but members must still meet the Stars thresholds within a 12-month window to gain or retain status.
Perks, Double Star days and exclusive access
Starbucks is adding benefits intended to reward frequency and higher spend. Green members gain Free Mod Mondays, a monthly perk that offers one complimentary beverage modification on a select Monday. Gold members get four Double Star days per year, which double Stars earned on qualifying purchases. Reserve members receive six additional Double Star days, for a total of 10 Double Star days annually.
Reserve-level members will also be eligible for limited, exclusives such as curated coffee events and occasional travel opportunities to coffee destinations. Starbucks describes these as celebratory experiences tied to coffee culture.
This new tiered structure gives members clearer ways to earn and redeem Stars and unlock benefits based on their engagement, while addressing concerns about expiring Stars,

Reaching and retaining status
To reach Gold, members must earn 500 Stars in a rolling 12-month period. Reserve status requires 2,500 Stars in 12 months. To retain Gold or Reserve from year to year, members must again earn 500 or 2,500 Stars respectively during the next 12-month period.
Members will see their tier assignment in the Starbucks app after the launch, with Stars balances carried over. The app will also show qualifying monthly activities that extend Green Stars by a month.
What members should do now
- Update the Starbucks app before Mar. 10 to view your tier and Stars balance.
- Check how close you are to a tier threshold and plan which purchases or months to use qualifying activity to extend Green Stars.
- Note new benefit dates, such as Free Mod Mondays and scheduled Double Star days, which will be announced through the app and Starbucks communications.
The relaunch simplifies the program into clear levels with explicit earning and expiry rules. For frequent shoppers the changes will lock in permanent Stars and add more Double Star opportunities, while occasional customers gain protections against sudden expiry through monthly activity.
