This week, the weather in Toronto was definitely a rollercoaster ride. At the beginning of the week, we were hit with a lot of snow; so much snow that a man called 911 just to complain about slow-moving plows. Just days later, the weather has had a complete change of heart, with Jan. 9 temperatures in Toronto reaching 15 degrees C, a new record for that calendar day.

The previous local temperature record for Jan. 9 was set in 2008, when the mercury climbed 12.5 degrees above freezing. Friday's new record shatters the previous mark by 2.5 degrees.

For reference, the average daily high in January is -0.3 degrees C, and the coldest Toronto has ever been in the month of January was way back on Jan. 10, 1859, when the temperature hit an astounding -32.8 degrees C.

The highest ever temperature recorded in the month of January in Toronto was established on Jan. 25, 1967, when thermometers soared to 16 degrees C, a record which Toronto nearly surpassed on Friday.

Environment Canada predicted that temperatures in Toronto could get as high as 17 degrees C this week, but Friday's daytime highs fell just short of this target, and colder weather will now once again descend on the city.
